Trinidad Update – June 10, 2013
The central bank of Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) decided at its May 2013
monetary policy meeting, to hold it key monetary policy rate at 2.75 per cent for the ninth consecutive month. Since January 2009, the central bank has reduced interest rates by a total of 600 basis points in a bid to jump start growth in the Trinidad and Tobago (TT) economy.

In recent weeks there have been concerns about PDVSA, the Venezuelan state run oil company. The concerns emanate from a bunching up of maturities in the near to medium term (2014 to 2017) totalling
US$14.62 billion over the next five years. There are concerns regarding rollover risk; further, the simple strategy of issuing a bond to finance the upcoming maturities could be viewed as a negative by investors because it would simply increase the level of indebtedness and show less of a commitment to the economic adjustment necessary to turn the country’s debt trajectory in the right direction. US Economic Update – May 10, 2013
The US economy has shown improvement both on a q-o-q basis as well as
from a y-o-y perspective for the March-2013 quarter. Economic activity on a q-o-q basis for Q1-2013 came in at a robust 2.5% compared to the modest 0.4% recorded for the December quarter.
